What to know: Studies after clinic procedures do not tell us what an exosome serum will do at home.
Exosomes are showing up in skincare products with big promises about smoother, younger-looking skin. The research is still early. Before paying extra for one of these products, check whether the study behind it tested a serum used at home.
What the research says
A July review found only a small amount of human research on topical exosomes. The studies used different preparations, and many combined them with a procedure. That makes it hard to say what an ordinary exosome serum will do on its own. Read the review
An August study found a wrinkle benefit when an exosome-related preparation was added after radiofrequency microneedling. All 60 participants had the procedure on both sides of their face. Only one side received the extra preparation.
That side improved more, but the study lasted just 12 weeks and the treatment was not hidden from participants and researchers. It leaves us with a result about care after a procedure. It does not tell us whether a bottle used on untreated skin would work the same way. Read the study
What to look for on the product page
Look for research on the actual formula. A brand should make it easy to see whether the product was tested on its own and what changed.
Be careful with phrases such as “age reversal” or a percentage improvement that has no clear explanation. A change on a research scale is not automatically the same amount of visible improvement in your skin.
Should you buy one?
You do not need an exosome serum to keep up with skincare. If the price is high and the only supporting study involved a procedure, there is still an important question unanswered: what will this product do when you use it at home?
For now, treat it as an optional purchase with uncertain benefits. A convincing ingredient story is not enough reason to replace products that already suit you.
