What to know: A cream can improve hydration without changing every measure of the skin barrier.
A cream may promise hydration, barrier support or both. Those claims can sound interchangeable on a label, but studies measure them differently.
Hydration describes water in the skin. Another measurement looks at how much water escapes through it. A product can change one without clearly changing the other.
The whole formula matters
A May study tested a cream containing panthenol, niacinamide and another soothing ingredient on one lower leg, leaving the other untreated. The treated skin held more water and lost less water over time.
That supports the formula tested. It does not tell us which ingredient did the work or whether the cream would beat another moisturizer. The study was funded by the company behind the product. Read the study
“More ceramides” is only part of the picture
A study published in June compared a cream with petroleum jelly on participants’ forearms. The cream increased measured ceramide levels, but the amount of water escaping through the skin did not significantly change. The study was small, was partly funded by Pigeon, and had two authors affiliated with the company. It was conducted in 2019 and 2020. Read the study
This is why a broad “barrier repair” claim deserves a closer look. Ask what actually improved. Was it moisture, a measured change in skin lipids, or how the skin felt?
Choosing a moisturizer
Look for evidence about the finished product. A familiar ingredient on the front of the bottle does not prove that one cream is better than another.
Also check what it was compared with. Doing better than untreated skin is a different result from doing better than another moisturizer.
These studies do not show that you need to replace a product that already suits your routine. They give you a way to judge the next claim you see: look for a clear explanation of what the formula did, without expecting one ingredient to explain the entire result.
