What to know: A peptide label is not enough to predict results. Look for research on the finished serum.
Peptides appear in plenty of creams and serums promising smoother-looking skin. The word on the label does not tell you how well the finished product works. Recent research gives us a few reasons to keep expectations specific.
The product tested matters
A March review combined studies of peptides taken by mouth with studies of peptides applied to skin. Much of the wrinkle result came from the products taken by mouth. You cannot use that combined result to predict what a face serum will do. Read the review
Another paper looked at a peptide serum used after laser treatment or radiofrequency microneedling. Some signs of recovery improved, but the main redness measurement did not show a clear difference between the treated sides. The work was funded by Galderma, and some authors worked for the company. These results are worth discussing, but they concern particular products and settings. They do not establish that every peptide serum gives the same benefit.
Look past the ingredient name
When a brand links to a study, check whether it tested the product you are buying. Then check what the researchers measured. Recovery after a procedure is a different question from whether a daily serum makes fine lines less noticeable.
A study can also improve one measurement without improving another. Product pages should explain that plainly, rather than showing only the most favorable result.
Do you need a peptide serum?
It is an optional step. These papers do not show that everyone needs to add one or that a more expensive peptide formula will work better.
If you are comparing two products, give more weight to clear evidence about the finished formula than to a long list of peptide names. If you cannot find that evidence, keep the expected benefit modest. The label alone is not enough to choose a winner.
